In the setup described above, the array will remain intact if one drive from each of the RAID 5 sets fail and will not cause any data loss. It means that after the first drive failure, the remaining drives should not fail to prevent array failure. If any of the remaining drives fail, the array will fail.

The fault tolerance level of the array also depends on how the array is configured. If you construct three RAID 5 sets containing seven drives each, it will provide you good capacity, but provide fault-tolerance of up to three drives. On the other hand, an array with seven RAID 5 sets containing three drives each will provide lower storage capacity but high fault tolerance of up to seven drives. A reliable construction could be an array with three RAID 5 sets containing six drives each and a hot space that could provide immediate rebuilding of array on failure.
